With the cost of petrol predicted to sky rocket at the end of 2018, we want to share some tips to make your fuel go further.

Service with a smile

  • Use the correct spark plugs with the gap setting at 100%.
  • Service your car at a reputable centre or dealership.

At the petrol pump

  • Fill up before your fuel warning light comes on. The more air in the tank, the faster the fuel will evaporate.
  • Ask the petrol pump attendant to check the pressure on your tyres. Tyres that are too flat increases your fuel consumption.
  • Ask the petrol attendant to stop filling up your tank once it automatically stops. Overfilling the tank can lead to evaporation of fuel.

Which fuel is best?

  • Use premium fuel and multigrade engine oil. Filling up with higher octane fuel than recommended for your vehicle not only wastes your hard earned cash, but it will make your car use more fuel faster. If you have an older car that runs on both, opt for unleaded.

On the road

  • Remove unnecessary weight. No, we don’t mean you should go on a diet. Just remove roof and boot carriers when you’re not using them. Extra weight and wind resistance will increase your car’s fuel consumption.
  • Drive smoothly and avoid unnecessary acceleration.
  • By driving 20km/h slower, you can reduce your consumption by 10% and keep your heart rate lower at the same time.
  • Take the shortest route. Many GPS apps, such as Waze, can be set to automatically calculate the fastest and shortest route.
  • If at all possible, avoid peak traffic.
  • If your engine allows it, shift up a gear. You will use less fuel in higher gears.
  • Use the handbrake when waiting at traffic lights on an incline. Riding the clutch to keep your car from rolling backwards will not save any petrol.
  • Keep your windows closed when driving on the highway. Open windows cause drag that ups your usage.
  • Tying in with the previous point, don’t use your air conditioner unnecessarily, especially if you drive a smaller or older car.

At home

  • If your tank has accidently been overfilled, don’t park in the sun or on an incline. This will speed up evaporation.
